Ringo Starr

Ringo and his New All-Starr Band

(King Biscuit)

I just received in the mail---unsolicited---the new RINGO & HIS NEW ALL-STARR BAND live cd from the fine folks at the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

The word "travesty" leaps immediately to mind.

Now, it's not like I expected this to be GOOD or anything...but hearing Ring and the boys (Roger Hodgson, Ian Hunter, Howard Jones and Greg Lake) and the girl (the incomparable Sheila E., who actually screams "Chicago, put your hands together!" and "Are you ready to party?" and means it) dumb down and slick up classic Beatles and Ringo tunes is downright pathetic.

And they mostly hack apart their own tunes, too, with the exception of Hodgson, who actually sounds pretty damn good (which is probably why they let him have three tunes on here, while Ringo's other "All-Starrs" only get one each). I mean, you ain't LIVED till you've heard Sheila E. do 10 solid freakin' minutes of "The Glamorous Life."

Quite simply, this is a Vegas revue gone waaaaay bad and by the time I got to the end of a horrific "With A Little Help From My Friends" (Ringo, with friends like these...), I thought I heard Ringo bellow "Peace and love is the only way!!!" Why, Ringo, why? I mean, "Ringo's Rotogravure" I could forgive, but THIS? And, on a side note, if I see one more picture (or piece of video) with Ringo flashing that peace sign like he's been doing for the past 20-odd years, I'm gonna fucking hurl.

Oh, sorry for the vitriol; I forgot...peace and love is the only way.
