TAKE ME HOME

Mike Bennett:
CD-R of the Month:
November/December,
2005

Two for the price of one, sandwiched around a
contribution by mix CD master Valis. Valis sent me a
copy of his disc, which I shall comment on below. You
don’t need to send me a mix, but I’d love to see your
track list. E-mail me at: mike_bennett@fufkin.com.

November 2005 Mix CD-R:

Doublethinktank

The Fleshtones – Right Side Of A Good Thing (One of
the all-time great R & B frat rock party songs)
The Afternoons – Baby, You Know The Deal
The Four Tops – I’m In A Different World (Not a big
hit for them, but easily as good as any of their more
well known classics)
Doug Powell – Dear Me
Donovan’s Brain – When You’re Falling
Bob Seger – Love The One You’re With (Smoking cover of
the Stephen Stills song)
13 Engines – Smoke & Ashes (Too bad these guys never
really made it in America)

best singles of the ‘90s).

Children of Nuggets box set)

The Red Thread – Ship In The Attic
You Am I – Gone, Gone, Gone

The Intercontinental Playboys – Rock N Roll Johnny
The Beatles – Hard Day’s Night
Epicycle – You Should Know It (Follow The Beatles with
a cool Beatle-esque tunes)

This CD was sent to me by Valis, a fan of lots of cool
music, who I ‘met’ through My Space. I believe it was
related to both of us being Pillbugs fans or
something. Anyway, rather than comment on individual
tracks, let me comment beforehand. On this disc,
Valis creates a real mood. While not all of the songs
are psychedelic in a strict sense, there’s a certain
psych atmosphere that pervades on the disc. Yet
within these parameters, Valis finds songs with
different approaches and textures. So the twang of
The Sadies’ “Mother of Earth” and the electronic
underpinning of Cosmic Gardeners’ “Turning the Wheel”
and the gospel-from-outer-space choral vocals on
Electrelane’s “The Valleys” all fit into an impressive
whole.

There are some well known artists on here too – The
Beatles, Robert Plant (man, I need to get more of his
solo stuff), Grandaddy, Electric Light Orchestra and
others. Question – who is Joe Turner?? It’s not the
jump-blues legend Big Joe Turner, and (thankfully)
does not sound like the old hard rock singer Joe Lynn
Turner. Thank you very much for sending this to me,
Valis:

Morose Equinox

Metrovavan – Waltz Of The Sonambulist
Electrelane – The Valleys
Midlake – Some Of Them Were Superstitious
Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Eating Salt Is Easy
Cheese – All The Wrong Drugs
Joe Turner – When The Day Crowd Leaves
Let’s Active – Badger
Dipsomaniacs – Praying Winter (the excellent Norwegian
psychedelic band)
Robert Plant – Darkness, Darkness
The Sadies – Mother Of Earth
Paul Roland – Still Falls The Snow
The Coral – Eskimo Lament
Cosmic Gardeners – Turning The Wheel
Grandaddy – Crystal Lake
The Beatles – Fool On The Hill
The Pogues – Summer In Siam
The Jazz Butcher – The Good Ones
Electric Light Orchestra – One Summer Dream

Now, onto my December entry. The title comes from a
Fox News discussion of the so-called ‘War on
Christmas’.

Jesus Makes People Want To Spend Money

The Len Price 3 – She’s Lost Control
Irma Thomas – Break-A-Way (From the Rhino Girl Group
box – I first heard Tracy Ullman’s version of this)
LMNOP – Torn Lining
The Fall – Bo Demmick
The Carlsonics – Ice People (Cool Velvets inspired
garage-ish rock)
Milk ‘n’ Cookies – (Dee, Dee You’re) Stuck On A Star
The 88 – Coming Home
Utopia – Cry Baby (Last killer Utopia song)
Pizzicato 5 – The World’s Spinning at 45 RPM
The Get Quick – New Plimsoles (One of the best songs
of the year)

song)
The Sugarplastic – Earthbound
Paul Weller – All On A Misty Morning
Cream – Badge (I finally got a Cream comp)
Mull Historical Society – Gravity
The High Dials – Soul In Lust
The Scruffs – Treachery (Their second can’t hold a
candle to their debut, but still good power pop)
My Dad Is Dead – Baby’s Got A Problem

Pavement – Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17
Johnny Paycheck – He’s In A Hurry (To Get Home To My
Wife)(Johnny was so great at cheating songs)
